Acadia First Nation (AFN), owns and operates the AFN Youth Centre located in Yarmouth, NS. The Centre offers an Aboriginal Head Start Program, Afterschool and Drop-in Program, and Summer Day Camps for AFN members children. AFN is currently recruiting for an Assistant Early Childhood Education (ECE) Coordinator full-time position. This position is responsible for supporting the ECE Coordinator with the operations of the AFN Youth Centre efficiently and in accordance with Mi’kmaq Childcare Facility Guidelines and provincial licensing requirements related to planning, organizing, supervising, control and evaluating the AFN Childcare Program.


  • Provides overall support to the ECE Coordinator for the management and day to day operations of the AFN Youth Centre regarding the following:
    • Establish and maintain an environment of healthy play and learning, that it is welcoming and inviting tIndigenous children and families
    • Promote and support Mi’kmaq Language and Culture, integrated intday tday programming and activities
    • Develop and implement programs and activities that reflect and balance the needs and interests of the children, community and parents that are developmentally age appropriate and have a positive impact on children’s learning
    • Ensures all health, medical and safety needs of the children are attended tand documented
    • Maintain accurate and up tdate records of employees and children and inventory of supplies
    • Ensure the outdoor play area and equipment are clean, safe and in good operation
    • Manage staff tmaintain a healthy and safe play environment including maintaining organization of toys, books, craft supplies, chairs and high chairs and that broken toys/equipment are disposed of as required
    • Manage staff tmonitor and support children’s social, mental, physical and spiritual strengths and needs
    • Participate in regular meetings with education and health employees tsupport children’s program development and/or addressing children’s needs
    • Recruit, support, coach, discipline and evaluate employees according tAFN policies and procedures.
    • Liaise with the Human Resources Manager tsupport recruitment, and disciplinary procedures for all employees
    • Conduct regular monthly meetings with the Band Manager and CFtmaintain the monthly/annual budget
    • Establish and submit funding proposals tsupport children’s programs and activities
    • Liaise with other Mi’kmaw communities, organizations and government agencies tsupport the operations of the AFN Youth Centre
    • Keeps a record of attendance and payments for all children
    • Promote the AFN Youth Centre and its services
    • Establish excellent relationships with parents and maintains regular daily communications for children in attendance
    • Organize, with the Human Resources Manager, employee health and safety training sessions
    • Conducts regular staff meetings and organize professional development training sessions as needed
    • Adhere tall AFN policies and procedures


  • Diploma or certificate in Early Childhood Education, with a minimum of two years’ experience in a Childcare or Head Start Program
  • Knowledge and experience working in a Mi’kmaw community
  • Two years in a supervisory role
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • First Aid/OHS/WHIMIS
  • Food Handler’s Course
