Wasoqopa’q First Nation (WFN) owns and operates the Kina’masuti Centre, open Monday to Thursday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm daily. The Kina’masuti Centre provides programming and activities and is equipped with computers for WFN community members to access, a “lend-a-book” library, gathering space, comfortable seating, and complimentary tea and coffee.
POSITION OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVE
WFN is currently recruiting for a part-time Youth Program Worker, liaising with the Learning Centre Coordinator, responsible for planning, organizing and delivering a Youth Program, one night per week, focused on youth ages 14-27, that promotes overall health, mental wellness, and personal development, addressing emotional, mental, physical and spiritual well-being.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
- Provides a safe, inclusive and supportive space where youth feel valued, heard and empowered.
- Builds positive relationships with youth to encourage and foster participation and personal growth
- Plans, coordinates and delivers a weekly Youth Program, one night per week at the Kina’masuti Learning Centre
- Obtains and prepares all supplies and materials required to implement the Youth Program
- Collaborates with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, WFN staff and partners with other presenters and facilitators to implement programming and activities
- Engages with youth, providing mentorship and informal guidance throughout programming and or activities
- Identifies and responds to youth needs and or concerns
- Maintains attendance and activity records for programming and activities
- Prepares basic reports and program outcomes
- Ensures the health and safety needs of youth attending programs and or activities are addressed
- Adhere to all Wasoqopa’q First Nation (WFN) Policies, Procedures and necessary procedures, as required
- Working in a team environment, other duties, training and activities, as required
QUALIFICATIONS
- WFN Member
- Diploma or certificate in a related field (Child and Youth Care, Community Studies, Recreation), or relevant experience working with youth
- Knowledge and experience working in a Mi’kmaw community is considered an asset
- An understanding of Mi’kmaq culture and traditions is considered an asset
- Valid Driver’s License and access to reliable transportation is required
- Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check required
- Child Abuse Registry Check required
REQUIRED ABILITIES, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Ability to work flexible hours (evenings and or weekends)
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills to engage and connect with youth
- Effective communication skills, including active listening, and conflict resolution
- Ability to facilitate group discussions and activities
- Ability to develop, coordinate and deliver engaging and meaningful youth activities
- Ability to build trusting relationships with youth, families and community members
- Basic computer skills, Microsoft Office programs
- A commitment to fostering, cultivating and preserving a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Hours of work are dependant on the planning and execution of a Youth Program, one night per week, with additional time to plan and organize, 10 hours per week
- Additional hours may be required, dependant on the program or activity
- Flexible hours to conduct programming in the evenings or weekends
- A valid driver’s license is required, as is access to a vehicle
- A great deal of time is spent working indoors in well maintained, heated and ventilated environment with modern and up-to-date equipment
- There are instances of lifting heavy boxes of supplies and materials up to 20 lb
